Wardrobe Staple – The Shirt Dress

Wardrobe Staple – The Shirt Dress

The shirt dress has been gracing woman’s wardrobes since the 1940s and for many women, is an absolute wardrobe staple. I have two in my wardrobe. I have a gingham print Altuzarra shirt dress that I purchased this time last year and my most recent and obtainable purchase the Madewell Checked Twill Shirt Dress from Netaporter.

Shirt dresses come in different shapes, lengths and prints. I like them to be long enough so that I can bend over without showing any underwear and when they don’t have a fitted waist I like to tie a shirt around my waist to add definition. I also like the shirt dress to be plain in colour and a pattern so it can be either casual or can be styled to be more dressy.

There are many ways to wear the shirt dress. They are very easy to dress up or down. For a more casual look I like to tie a shirt around my waist and wear a boot or a trainer. To dress a shirt dress up for evening its nice to leave a couple of the top buttons undone, roll up the sleeve to elbow length if it’s a long sleeve, add a thin belt to cinch the waste and pointed toe heel to complete the look.
